BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Hoosiers opened their 2009 campaign of dual meets with three wins over Eastern Kentucky, Toledo and Gardner-Webb. The team dropped just two singles matches and no doubles matches in a day that saw them matchup 23 times.
Against Eastern Kentucky, the number three doubles combo of senior Peter Antons
and freshman Maxime Armengaud
got things rolling with an 8-0 dismissal of Vadzim Ivanis and E. Piriz Fernandez. The Hoosiers went on to win 7-0, with every match ending in straight sets.
Toledo provided a little tougher test, but IU still managed a 6-1 victory, highlighted by Antons winning 13 of the final 15 games to close out Jayson Miller in a three set thriller that saw Antons drop the first set and fall behind 0-4 in the second. He went on to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
While Gardner-Webb's Evgeny Slesarev was able to take the number one singles bout, the Hoosiers were still able to defeat the Bulldogs 8-1. Freshmen Stephen Vogl
and Will Kendall
found a way to win their number three doubles match. Trailing late, the combo forced a tiebreaker with Rafael Altmayer and Carlos Quijano. In the tiebreaker, the IU rookies dominated, winning 7-2.
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23, when they play New Mexico Institute of Technology in the first of three matches in Albuquerque. For complete coverage of IU tennis, stay tuned to www.IUHoosiers.com.
