Sunday, 03/08/2009

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana was able to hold onto the early lead, defeating the #44 Northwestern Wildcats by a score of 4-3. The Hoosiers grabbed the doubles point and used key wins by sophomores Lachlan Ferguson and Santiago Gruter to finish off NU.

Indiana jumped out to an early lead, winning the number one and two doubles flights for an early 1-0 advantage. Gruter and freshman Jeremy Langer disposed of their Wildcat competition 8-4 at number one, and Ferguson and freshman Stephen Vogl took down the 80th ranked doubles team in the country of Alex Sanborn and Joshua Graves.

Ferguson kept the ball rolling taking down #82 Marc Dwyer decisively for a 2-0 IU advantage. He recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over the nationally ranked foe. The win is his third of the season over a ranked opponent. The next two matches (flights three and four) fell in the straight sets to the Wildcats, knotting the score at two all.

The three remaining matches all went to a third set. The first of the final three matches to finish was at number five singles. Freshman Maxime Armengaud decisively took the third set for a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2 win. The Hoosiers led 3-2. The momentum from that win carried over to the remaining matches at two and six singles.

With the fans getting louder and louder, Gruter was able to use that momentum to carry out the win in the third set. The Lima, Peru native won a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 decision over Tobias Reitz, sealing the Hoosier win and moving Indiana to 1-0 in Big Ten play and 8-7 overall.
