Hoosiers Battle Back, Down the Nittany Lions
Sunday, 04/12/2009

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana got behind early against Penn State on Sunday, but the Hoosiers wouldn’t stay down for long. After dropping the doubles point, the Hoosiers found themselves in a bit of a hole. The Hoosiers battled and fought their way back in each match. Singles wins from freshmen Maxime Armengaud, Stephen Vogl and Jeremy Langer as well as sophomore Lachlan Ferguson got IU a 4-3 victory.

Down 3-2 with only Langer and Ferguson left on the courts, Indiana needed both matches for the win. At number three singles, Langer battled through flu-like symptoms to pull out a third-set victory in a match that was close the whole way through. Langer dropped the first set in a tie breaker after leading 6-5. He faced the same situation in the second set, but this time he closed it out for a 7-5 win. Langer then convincingly took the final set 6-2.

With that momentum, Ferguson won his second set 7-5 as well to force a third frame of his own. Just like Langer, Ferguson took control of his number one singles match and didn’t let up in the third for a 6-2 win. Both Langer and Ferguson won their matches by an identical score, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2.

Armengaud’s match squared things up at one all. He won his first set at number four singles 6-1, but fell behind in his second set 5-2. The Nice, France product wasn’t done, however, he came back to force a tiebreaker for the second frame, and he won the tiebreaker in seven straight points.

Vogl’s number six singles match was perhaps the catalyst to turning the IU’s fortunes around. After falling 6-3 in the first set, Vogl won 12 of the next 14 games to take the match by a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 score. That momentum carried over to the other courts and tied things back up after Penn State took the win at number five singles.

Indiana returns to action on Saturday, April 18, when they visit the Michigan State Spartans. For complete coverage of Indiana tennis, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
