No. 12 Clemson Hands UCF Women’s Tennis 7-0 Loss
Monday, 03/16/2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – Facing five ranked singles players and two ranked doubles pairs from No. 12 Clemson, the UCF women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 defeat Monday at the UCF Tennis Complex. The Knights’ singles lineup battled hard in every match yet could not post an upset over the Tigers (10-5), as the Black and Gold’s record fell to 8-5 this season.

Clemson’s top two doubles combinations were ranked No. 20 and No. 30 in the nation, respectively, and both earned wins to hand the Tigers a 1-0 overall lead. At the No. 3 spot, junior Katie Orletsky and freshman Christy Core were just shy of avoiding the shutout, dropping their match to Alexandra Luc and Estefania Balda, 9-7.

In singles action, sophomore Jenny Frisell had the task of going up against the No. 1-ranked collegiate player in Ani Mijackia, and pushed her to the limit in the first set. Frisell ultimately served at 5-4 but witnessed Mijackia break and post a 7-6(5), 6-2 win.

“I’m very happy with my performance,” said Frisell, who is now 2-2 at the No. 1 position this year. “I think I competed well, but she played better in the second set. She was able to push me back in the court and her serve was bigger than mine. Hopefully I’ll beat a ranked player soon because I’ve been so close.”

Freshman Andrea Yacaman also put the No. 4-ranked player to the test at No. 2, storming out to a 5-0 lead against Josipa Bek only to see Bek climb back en route to a 7-5, 6-4 triumph. And fellow freshman Alexis Rodriguez erased a one-set deficit at the No. 4 position vs. No. 117 Ina Hadziselimovic, claiming the second set 6-2. However, Clemson rebounded for the 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win.

UCF will have yet another tough opponent when it returns to the court Friday for a 2 p.m. rumble with No. 15 Tennessee.
