DeLAND, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – Playing in its final regular season match, the UCF women’s tennis team cruised past host Stetson 5-2 Saturday in DeLand. Three freshmen including Taylor Dubins (North Miami Beach, Fla.), playing her first singles match, posted singles victories helping the Knights improve their record to 11-9 on the dual-match season.
The No. 50 doubles tandem of sophomore Jenny Frisell (Gothenburg, Sweden) and senior Elvira Serrot (Madrid, Spain) began the day with an 8-5 victory over Valentina Galbarini and Unnati Purushotham to extend their overall record to 12-4. The Knights took an early 1-0 lead when freshman Alexis Rodriguez (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Andrea Yacaman (Cartagena, Columbia) took down Breanna Atkinson and Katherine Nowicki at No. 2, 8-5.
In singles play, UCF used a strong performance from the bottom of its lineup to post four singles victories against Stetson (13-6). At No. 3, Yacaman breezed past Purushotham, 6-2, 6-0, and Rodriguez at No. 4 toppled Nowicki in a 7-5, 6-0 win.
Notching her 13th victory of the season, junior Katie Orletsky (Titusville, Fla.) converted on a third-set super tiebreaker at No. 5 to post a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) triumph over Shannon Gunning. Taking the court for the first time in singles action, Dubins recorded her first-career victory in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, against Natalie Gorham.
The Knights now head to Houston for the Conference USA Championship from April 16-19. Last year, UCF advanced to the second round after defeating Memphis 4-3 on the first day of competition.
