UCF Women’s Tennis Falls Short at North Florida, 4-3
Knights return to the courts at Stetson on Saturday.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – In its closest match of the season, the UCF women’s tennis team came up just short, 4-3, against North Florida. The Knights pushed four of their singles matches into a third set before the Ospreys (14-4) closed out three of the matches dropping UCF’s record to 10-9 on the season.
In the doubles competition, freshmen Alexis Rodriguez (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Andrea Yacaman (Cartagena, Columbia) at No. 2 posted an 8-6 win against Ina Durcakova and Nicita van Lierop. At No. 3, UCF took the doubles point when freshman Christy Core (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Katie Orletsky (Titusville, Fla.) knocked off Lauren Holton and Victoria Krook, 8-6.
Singles matches were tightly contested all day, with four of the six positions reaching a decisive third set. Rodriguez took the first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-1) from Van Lierop at No. 4. Then she put her opponent away 6-0 in the second set. At No. 3, senior Elvira Serrot (Madrid, Spain) dropped the first set 6-3 and fought back to steal the second 6-2 against Durcakova. In the third set, the senior finished off her opponent with a 6-3 victory clinching the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
UNF pulled through in the final two singles matches at No. 5 and No. 1 to clinch a 4-3 win over UCF. The Ospreys battled through very tight third sets in both matches, including a tiebreaking win at No. 5.
With the victory, the Ospreys tied up the all-time series at four wins a piece against the Knights.
The Knights finish up their regular season schedule on April 11 at Stetson. Then, UCF heads to Houston, for the Conference USA Championship from April 16-19.
