FAU Women’s Tennis Takes FGCU 5-2
Owls move to 2-3 on the year
BOCA RATON, FL (January 31, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University’s women’s tennis team set the tone of Saturday afternoon’s contest with double dominance defeating Florida Gulf Coast University 5-2.
The victory moves the Owls to 2-3 on the season and presents an opportunity to move to .500 Sunday when FAU plays host to Columbia University.
Florida Gulf Coast was a great competitor,” said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU’s first-year head coach. “We played with a lot of heart and confidence today. I look forward to our next match against Columbia.”
The Owls began play by capturing the doubles point with an 8-4 victory by Natalia Totevska and Dominique Wimmer at no. 1. The no. 2 duo of Erika Mrazkova and Danielle Simone follow suite also at 8-4. FAU’s Emma Rossiter and Cassie Bergeson were the first to come off the court with an 8-1 win at no. 3 doubles.
The two teams went right into singles play. Emma Rossiter made quick work of her match at no. 4 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. All but two of the five remaining singles matches battled into the third set. Erika Mrazkova wrapped up her match and the team’s third point with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at no. 3. Dominique Wimmer, who has played strong tennis for the Owls was forced to end her match early after an injury. Natalia Totevska captured no. 1 singles at 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and Danielle Simone rounded out FAU’s scorers with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win at no. 5.
FAU will next play host to Columbia University 10 a.m. Sunday at Patch Reef Park.
