CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Jan. 29, 2011) --- The FIU women's tennis team lost to the No. 11-ranked Miami Hurricanes, 5-2, on Saturday, Jan. 29, during the opening match of ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
Coral Gables serves as one of 15 host sites nationally for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, which features four teams at every site. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va., Feb. 18-21.
UM jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after taking the doubles points on back-to-back victories. FIU's Lisa Johnson and Rita Maisak won the final doubles match, downing the duo of Danielle Mills and Brittany Dubins, 7-5.
The Hurricanes won four-straight singles matches to seal the victory. The Panthers rebounded with wins in the final two matches as senior Liset Brito defeated No. 98 Anna Bartenstein, 75-, 6-2, and Lisa Johnson defeated No. 98 Mills, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8. The pair of victories put FIU on the board, 5-2.
The loss dropped FIU to 1-2 on the year, while UM improved to 2-0.
FIU is slated to take on No. 22 South Carolina in the consolation match of ITA Kickoff Weekend on Sunday, Jan. 30. The match is scheduled for 10 a.m.
