FIU Finishes Day Two of USTA/ITA Southeast Regional

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 22, 2011) --- Three members of the FIU women’s tennis team have advanced to the third day of the 2011 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championship in Gainesville, Fla.

Senior Lisa Johnson, sophomore Giulietta Boha and freshman Karyn Guttormsen each won two singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament’s consolation bracket. Johnson began the day with a victory over Georgia State’s Tereza Larova, 6-3, 6-2. She then defeated UCF’s Alexis Rodriguez, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, for her third singles victory of the season. Boha improved her singles record to 4-1 this season with a pair of victories on Saturday. She defeated UCF’s Courtney Griffith, 6-2, 6-2, then followed that up with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 victory over Kennesaw State’s Therese Lagerkvist. Guttormsen took on Stetson’s Clarke Tatje in the first round of the consolation bracket, winning, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. The first-year Panther advanced to the third round of the bracket following a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast’s Jen Evans in the round of 16.

All three Panthers will begin quarterfinal play on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 10:30 a.m.

Earlier in the day freshman Sarah McLean was eliminated from the main draw singles bracket, falling to Elizabeth Kilborn (Georgia Tech), 6-4, 6-1. The loss was the first of the season for the Miami native. Also falling today in the consolation bracket were junior Rita Maisak (lost to UNF’s Aline Berkenbrock, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4) and senior Christine Seredni (lost to Kennesaw State’s Vera Shkundina, 6-2, 6-4).
