CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Jan. 30, 2011) --- The FIU women's tennis team fell to the No. 22-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks, 5-2, on Sunday, Jan. 30, in the consolation match of ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
South Carolina began the match, taking two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the morning. The duo of Magali Holt and Lisa Johnson earned the Panthers lone double victory, downing Mijana Jocic and Madeleine Saari-Bystrom, 8-2.
In singles play, FIU (No. 54) picked up two points on victories by senior Liset Brito and junior Christine Seredni. Brito defeated Anya Morgina (No. 37), 6-3, 6-3, for her third-straight singles victory. Seredni defeated Dijana Stojic (No. 93), 6-7 (4), 6-0, 11-9, to improve to 3-1 in dual matches this season. The Gamecocks took four-straight matches to start singles play, clinching the victory at 5-0. Brito and Seredni got FIU on the board to make the score 5-2.
The loss was the second-straight for the Panthers, who drop to 1-3 on the year.
FIU will travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the Florida Gators on Sunday, Feb. 6. The match is set for 11:00 a.m.
