McLean Advances to the Round of 32 at Southeast Regionals

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 21, 2011) --- Freshman Sarah McLean defeated Florida Gulf Coast’s Gyanna Mandic, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the second round of the 2011 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championship at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.

The victory was the third of the season for the Miami native, who will next face Georgia Tech’s Elizabeth Kilborn at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22.

McLean was one of six Panthers participating in the singles portion of the four-day event. Senior Christine Seredni fell to USF’s Loreto Alonso, 6-3, 6-0, while senior Lisa Johnson lost to Georgia Tech’s Lynn Blau (No. 124), 6-3, 6-0. Junior Rita Maisak suffered her first loss of the season, dropping a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 decision to Georgia Southern’s Paola Garrido. Sophomore Guilietta Boha fell to No. 69 Caroline Lilly (Georgia Tech), 6-1, 6-0, and freshman Karyn Guttormsen lost to the Yellow Jacket’s Christina Ngo (No. 44), 6-1, 6-4.

Despite the losses on the day, all five will take part in the consolation bracket, beginning at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.

In doubles action, the duo of Seredni and Johnson advanced to the second round, defeating USF’s Alessandra Bonte and Fanny Fracassi, 8-1, before being eliminated by Florida’s tandem of Olivia Janowicz and Caroline Hitimana, 8-4.

In the first round of action, Guttormsen and McLean fell to UCF’s Taylor Dubins and Andrea Yacaman, 8-3, while Boha and Maisak lost to North Florida’s Melanie Aguirre and Danielle Day, 9-7.
