Hoosiers Win Three Flights at UNF Invitationa
Sunday, 10/11/2009

Leslie Hureau and Evgeniya Vertesheva, the two newest members of the Indiana Univeristy women’s tennis team, each concluded their weekend in Jacksonville, Fla., at the UNF Fall Invitational with flight titles. Hureau won both her singles and doubles flight.

“As a team we had very mixed results, but individually several of the players really stood out,” said Head Coach Lin Loring.

Vertesheva defeated Coastal Carolina’s Michaela Bunea, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the Singles A Draw finals where she was scheduled to face her teammate Hureau. Hureau put herself in the championship match by topping Alexis Rodriguez of Central Florida, 6-2, 6-0 in her semifinal contest. Vertesheva and Hureau shared the flight co-championship.

“Evgeinya and Leslie had great singles performances reaching the finals of the A Flight singles,” said Loring. “By that time we had had three days of 90-degree tennis, so we didn’t have them play each other.”

Hureau remains undefeated as a Hoosier, also claiming the doubles title with Myriam Sopel as her partner. That doubles tandem has yet to suffer a defeat during the 2009-10 season, including their 8-0 blanking of Troy’s Kelly Irving and Lauren Sampson in the flight title match.

“Leslie and Myriam played a great match in winning the A Flight doubles title, 8-0,” said Loring.

Next up for the Hoosiers is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional, played in Cincinnati, Ohio, from Oct. 22-26.
