MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The ITA Regional Championships continued on Monday with IU’s Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva winning the doubles back draw championship to cap off a 4-1 doubles record together during their time in Memphis.
The Hoosier duo matched up against Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray of the host school Memphis to decide the back draw championship. Fujimoto and Vertesheva put away the Tiger combo by a final match score of 8-5.
In the main draw singles quarterfinals, No. 80 Vertesheva played No. 100 Jackie Wu of Vanderbilt. Wu outlasted Vertesheva in a close first set, 7-5, before taking the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. In a late match on Sunday, Oct. 16, Fujimoto was dominant over Stefanie Villajuan of Louisville in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Vertesheva and Fujimoto will return to Bloomington this week as the rest of the team will be in action at a tournament hosted by the University of Kansas on Oct. 21-23.
