MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Main draw play began at the ITA Regional Championships in Memphis on Saturday with IU’s Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva both picking up singles wins and a doubles victory.
In singles play, Vertesheva was dominant in her opening match as the No. 4 seed. She blanked Xavier’s Andrea Wolf in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Fujimoto also played well in her first match in the main draw defeating Andrea Arques-Garcia of Memphis, 6-3, 6-1.
Vertesheva and Fujimoto also teamed up for doubles play to start off the day. In their opening match, the duo lost a tough contest to Kentucky’s Khristina Blajkevitch and Jessica Stiles, 8-6. However, the IU tandem rebounded in the doubles back draw topping Stephanie McLoughlin and Gabrielle Rubenstein, 8-5.
Play will resume on Sunday with doubles action beginning the day at 8:30 a.m. CT.
