Monday, 01/19/2009

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State doubles tandem of freshman Lutfiana Budiharto and senior Anna Egorova has been ranked No. 30 in the first national Intercollegiate Tennis Association Collegiate Tennis Poll of the 2009 season.

The Shocker duo concluded the fall season with a 7-2 record after advancing to the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Central Regional Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, and breezed through the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships with a 3-0 record. Budiharto and Egorova received additional accolades when they were recognized by the ITA with a No. 3 ranking in the ITA Central Regional Polls.

"This is a great ranking for Lutfiana and Anna," Director of Tennis Chris Young said. "They played at a high level this fall, and played off of eachother's strengths. They have a bright future ahead of them this spring."

Wichita State was also well-represented on the first ITA Central Regional Singles Poll of the 2009 season. Junior Stephanie Dalmacio was ranked No. 11 in the region, while Budiharto was ranked No. 15. Senior Torrie Browning rounded out the Shockers in the poll by being ranked No. 21.

As a team, the Shockers moved up a spot from last year's final poll, as they have appeared in the ITA Team Poll for the 32nd-consecutive ranking period. The team has been tabbed No. 70 as the 2009 season begins. Prior to the team's first appearance in the Jan. 30, 2007 poll, no Shocker squad had ever been ranked."

"Being ranked for 32 straight ranking periods is a real testament to the direction of our program," Young said. "It reflects on the hard work these girls have put in over the last couple years, and shows that Shocker tennis really is on the rise."

The Shockers begin their quest for their third Missouri Valley Conference Championship in four years on Feb. 1 when they host the University of Central Oklahoma. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m., and will be played at Genesis Health Club on Rock Road between 13th and 21st streets.
