Wichita State University Women Team News
No. 70 Shockers Ground Jets, 7-0
Tuesday, 02/03/2009

WICHITA -- On the same day it jumped one spot in the ITA National poll, the Wichita State women's tennis team made quick work of NCAA Div. 2 Newman in a 7-0 win Tuesday afternoon at Wichita's Riverside Tennis Center.

The closest battle of the day came right off the bat in the No. 1 doubles match, where Shocker partners Stephanie Dalmacio and Laryssa Ferreira defeated Newman's Gabriela Balarin and Christa Lawlor in an 8-4 decision. Wichita State's Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu ousted Newman's Megan Lowe and Emily Jones, 8-1. Wichita freshman Lily Wakim made her Shocker debut with Anna Egorova in the No. 3 doubles match, and the duo earned an 8-0 victory over Newman's Emily Gerber and Danielle Drouhard.

Egorova and Wakim's shutout inspired the Shockers, who recorded sweeps in each singles match of the dual. Because of time constraints and lack of court space, eight-game pro-sets were played during the singles competition. The Shockers won each singles match, 8-0. Egorova defeated Balarin in the No. 1 match, while Dalmacio defeated Lowe at No. 2 and Hanisch defeated Gerber in the No. 3 match. In the lower positions,  Lazaroiu defeated Lawlor in the No. 4 match, while Ferreira defeated Jones in the No. 5 match. Wakim rounded out the sweep by defeating Drouhard in the No. 6 singles match.

Ranked No. 70 in the Feb. 3 ITA poll, the Shockers will be back in action Friday afternoon when they host Eastern Michigan in a 1 p.m. match at Genesis Health Club's Rock Road location.
