Day One of 2012 Adidas Hoosier Classic in the Books

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The first day of the 2012 Adidas Hoosier Classic concluded on Friday afternoon as Indiana women’s tennis picked up four singles wins and five double victories to start the tournament.
In the top singles flight, which is being played in round robin format, No. 50 Leslie Hureau of IU started on a strong note with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Winde Janssens of Colorado. Indiana’s Alecia Kauss also earned a victory over Notre Dame’s Quinn Gleason, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7).
Newcomer Jithme Jayawickrema won in her Hoosier debut in the second singles flight over CU’s Mazy Watrous, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Carolyn Chupa picked up IU’s fourth singles triumph of the day in the third singles flight, as she topped CarlaManzi Tenorio of Colorado, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles, Indiana’s Sophie Garre and Hureau teamed up for two wins to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Shannon Murdy and Kauss will also play in the quarterfinals of the doubles flight after winning twice. Although they had a minor setback to begin the doubles draw, the IU combo of Chupa and Katie Klyczek picked up a win as well in the consolation bracket.
