Friday, 02/06/2009

KALAMAZOO -- The No. 54 Western Michigan women's tennis team staged a dramatic, come-from-behind victory over Purdue, 4-3, at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday to increase their winning streak against unranked teams to 33 in a row.

The match came down to No. 2 singles with junior Emily Dudzik taking on Purdue junior Michelle Sammons. Sammons took the first set, 6-0, but Dudzik stormed back to win the second set, 6-2, and take a 4-0 lead in the third set. Sammons fought back to even the set, 4-4, and the two players held serve to force a match-deciding tiebreaker. It was all Dudzik at the end as she jumped out to a 6-0 lead and won 7-1 to give the Broncos (5-2) the win.

The Boilermakers (3-3) handed the Broncos only their second loss in the doubles point this season with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Senior Kerstin Pahl and sophomore Amanda Moccia won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

Western Michigan began to stage its comeback in singles with junior Yumi Matsuto winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 and Pahl earning a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 1. With her two wins on Friday, Pahl moved all alone into fourth place in career wins with 197 at Western Michigan.

Purdue won the next two matches at No. 3 and No. 4 to take back the lead, 3-2, and they led at No. 2 and No. 5 after winning the first sets.

Senior Ashley Moccia continued her late match heroics of late with another come-from-behind victory. Her three-set win over No. 56 South Alabama won the match last Saturday, and this time she won 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-0 to even the match and set the stage for Dudzik.

The Broncos host a doubleheader against No. 72 Yale at noon and Detroit at 6 p.m. tomorrow at West Hills Athletic Club. Admission is free.
