Western Michigan Women Topple In-State Rival Eastern Michigan, 7-0

KALAMAZOO -- The No. 72 Western Michigan women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference by defeating in-state rival Eastern Michigan, 7-0, at Sorensen Courts on Friday afternoon.

The Broncos (15-5, 2-0 MAC) didn't drop a set in winning their 36th consecutive MAC regular season match and improving to 30-8 all-time against the Eagles (3-12, 0-3 MAC).

The Broncos dominated in doubles with juniors Emily Dudzik and Yumi Matsuto improving to 8-5 at No. 1 doubles with an 8-0 win, while No. 64 Amanda Moccia and Kerstin Pahl moved to 12-0 this season with an 8-1 win at No. 3. Ashley Moccia and Jenny Nalepa completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory at No. 2. doubles.

Western Michigan has gone 15-4 at both No. 5 and No. 6 singles this season and that success continued against Eastern Michigan. Amanda Moccia and Rachel Denny both won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 and No. 5. Denny's win was her fifth in a row and moved her to 4-0 at No. 5 singles this season.

Pahl clinched the match by winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles for her eighth consecutive victory and the 109th of her career, one shy of tying the WMU school record for singles victories.

The Broncos rounded out the scoring with Dudzik winning 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2, Maria Nivia's 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 and Nalepa won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.

The Broncos continue MAC play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Toledo (10-6, 1-1 MAC) at Sorensen Courts (outdoors) or West Hills Athletic Club (indoors), depending on the weather.
