Western Michigan's Pahl Sets New School Record in Rout of Butler
Saturday, 03/14/2009

INDIANAPOLIS -- Western Michigan senior women's tennis player Kerstin Pahl won both of her matches in a rout of Butler, 7-0, to become the all-time leader in career wins at Western Michigan with 213. She passes her former teammate and good friend Noriko Saruta who set the record last season with 212 career wins.

"It's a great achievement," Pahl said. "I hoped when I arrived here that this was something I could strive for, but it was never my primary goal. This record isn't about me, it's about the team and reaching this mark as part of the team. It's great to have the record, but the ultimate goal is still to win the Mid-American Conference and that is what it's all about."

This is the fourth season in a row that the all-time wins record has been broken. Rattiya Hiranrat finished her career with 200 wins in 2006 in Pahl's freshman year, followed by Carrie Jeanmaire winning 204 matches at the conclusion of her career in 2007. Saruta then moved the record up to 212 wins last season.

"It's a fantastic achievement," head coach Betsy Kuhle said. "It's been even more fun the way they keep chasing each other down and re-setting the record every season and she's still got a lot of matches left to play this season. It's also impressive because she moved here from Germany and had to make that adjustment, while also maintaining nearly a 3.8 GPA. She's just fantastic all-around."

A native of Kiel, Germany, Pahl is tied with men's player R.J. Dunkle (1982-85) for the most wins in WMU tennis history with at least 11 more matches left to play this season.

Pahl defeated Natali Jaimes 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Amanda Moccia to form the 59th-ranked doubles team in the country and win 8-0 at No. 3 doubles against the Bulldogs (5-7).

The 65th-ranked Broncos (12-4) also received an 8-1 victory from Ashley Moccia and Jenny Nalepa at No. 2 doubles and an 8-7 triumph by Emily Dudzik and Yumi Matsuto at No. 1 doubles.

The Broncos also swept through singles as Dudzik won 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (8) at No. 2, Nalepa won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3, Amanda Moccia won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, Ashley Moccia emerged victorious 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and Rachel Denny won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.

Western Michigan travels west to Terre Haute, Ind., to take on Indiana State (1-7) at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
