STOW, Ohio -- The No. 70 Western Michigan women's tennis team bounced back from Friday's defeat to take out Akron, 4-3, at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow, Ohio, on Saturday afternoon.

The Broncos (18-6, 5-1 MAC) remain in the race for the Mid-American Conference championship as they trail first place Miami (Ohio) (11-6, 6-0 MAC) by just one match with a meeting scheduled for next Friday in Kalamazoo at 1 p.m.

Akron jumped out to the early lead on the Broncos by taking the doubles point and winning the first singles match. Western Michigan did claim one doubles win as senior Kerstin Pahl and sophomore Amanda Moccia, ranked No. 66 in the country, improved to 16-0 with an 8-5 win at No. 2.

After the Zips (14-6, 4-3 MAC) won at No. 2 singles to take a two-point lead, 2-0, the Broncos rattled off the next four wins to improve to 19-0 against Akron.

Amanda Moccia reappeared in the singles lineup for the first time since March 27 and started the run with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Carolina Castro Cota at No. 6, while her sister, senior Ashley Moccia, moved up to No. 4 and improved to 7-2 at that spot with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jeremie Benjamin.

With the score evened, junior Yumi Matsuto won 6-3, 6-1 over Kerry Langworthy at No. 5 in her first dual match singles appearance since March 1 to give the Broncos their first lead, 3-2. Freshman Maria Nivia finished off the Zips by winning 6-3, 6-2 over Tanyaradzwa Gombera in her first career match at No. 3 after playing at No. 4 and 6 in her earlier dual singles matches.

Akron did win the final match on the court to account for the final margin, 4-3. This was the 10th one-point match of the season for the Brown & Gold and they are 6-4 in such contests.
