Western Michigan Handles Toledo, 7-0
Saturday, 03/28/2009

KALAMAZOO -- The No. 72 Western Michigan women's tennis team continued its mastery of the Mid-American Conference to open the 2009 campaign with a 7-0 sweep of Toledo at West Hills Athletic Club on Saturday. The Broncos (16-5, 3-0 MAC) increased their MAC regular season winning streak to 37 matches in a row and improved to 33-1 all-time against the Rockets (10-8, 1-3 MAC).

Western Michigan started the sweep by winning all three doubles matches. Senior Ashley Moccia and freshman Maria Nivia partnered for the first time this season and won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles, while No. 64 Amanda Moccia and Kerstin Pahl moved up to No. 2 and won going away, 8-3, to remain undefeated at 13-0 this season. At No. 1 doubles, Yumi Matsuto and Emily Dudzik remained undefeated in conference play with an 8-4 triumph.

The bottom of the WMU lineup made sure Toledo wouldn't be making any comeback in singles. Nearly one after the other, Ashley Moccia won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and then freshman Rachel Denny finished her match 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6. Nivia then closed out her match 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 to clinch the victory for the Broncos.

Western Michigan wouldn't be satisfied with a victory as they wanted all of the points. Freshman Jenny Nalepa kept the sweep alive by winning her sixth match in a row at No. 3 6-3, 7-5.

Pahl took possession of another WMU school record with her 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1. The win was the 110th singles victory of her career, tying Sue Weigand's (1981-84) school record that has stood for 25 years. The win was also the 223rd overall victory of her career as this weekend Pahl became only the third player in MAC history to surpass 220 career wins.

Finally, Dudzik won a war of tiebreakers at No. 2 with a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), 1-0 (5) victory for her 21st singles victory of the season.

After starting conference play with three straight home victories, the Broncos go on the road for the first time in conference play next weekend. WMU will head to DeKalb, Ill., to play Northern Illinois on April 4.
