San Diego, Calif. - In the first day of the USD Invitational, sophomore Maja Sujica continued her unbeaten streak in 2009 by defeating Furman University's Jessica Preeg to clinch the match win for the Toreros. 50th ranked San Diego downed the Paladins by a final of 4-3 Thursday afternoon to move to an overall record of 6-1 on the very promising 2009 Spring season.

San Diego secured an initial 1-0 advantage by earning the doubles point. Senior Tammy Kevey and Sujica quickly disposed of the Paladin tandem, Lauren Tomory and Jennifer Betts, 8-2. Freshman Juliette Coupez and junior Samantha Mouly clinched at No. 1, beating Furman's pair, Laura Giola and Monica Arguello, 8-5.

Moving into singles play, Furman would battle back to even the score when at No. 2 #80 Arguello downed Mouly in two sets, 6-0, 6-1.

The Toreros would receive their first win at No. 6, as Maria Raygada kept her undefeated singles streak alive by topping Betts, 6-1, 7-5(2). Kevey moved the Toreros to a 3-1 lead with her win at No. 4, earning the win over Susan Bitetti in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

But the Paladins captured the next two match victories at No. 1 (#7 Giola def. Coupez, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3) and at No. 5 (Tomoroy def. junior Alexandra Demidova, 7-5, 6-4), creating a 3-3 tie and forcing a deciding match at No. 3 singles.

The final match of the day came down to Sujica and Furman's Preeg on Court 3, playing for the match win. The match went three hard fought sets and once again, true to form, Sujica outlasted her competition, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, earning the individual win and more importantly, the match decision in favor of the Toreros.

The Toreros continue Invitationl play tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. PT against University of San Francisco, following a morning match between Furman and Portland at 10:00 a.m. PT.
