Toreros earn No. 2 seed for WCC Championships

(San Diego, CA) - The USD women's tennis team, with a record of 11-8 and riding the momentum of their 4-3 victory over 41st-ranked San Diego State, earned the No. 2 seeding for this weekend's 2009 West Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championships (April 17-19). On Friday USD will take on No. 7 seed Portland in a 11:30 a.m. match at The Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma. The WCC Championships are being held at the Barnes Tennis Center for the first time, and will run in conjunction with the 2009 WCC Men's Tennis Championships. Admission is free and there is plenty of parking available at the site (4490 West Point Loma Blvd.).

In the women's field, the bracket is as follows: No. 1 seed Pepperdine (41st in nation), No. 2 seed San Diego (61st in nation), No. 3 seed Saint Mary's, No. 4 seed San Francisco, No. 5 seed Loyola Marymount, No. 6 seed Santa Clara, No. 7 seed Portland, and No. 8 seed Gonzaga.

First day match-ups are as follows: 8:00 a.m. (Pepperdine vs. Gonzaga), 11:30 a.m. (San Diego vs. Portland; San Francisco vs. Loyola Marymount), and 3:00 p.m. (Saint Mary's vs. Santa Clara).

On the women's side, the Pepperdine women have been nearly as dominant as the men's team, claiming 20 of the last 21 WCC Championships, including the last six titles. Loyola Marymount is the only other current WCC member to have won a women's championship, claiming their first-ever title in 2002.
