Ducks Start Pac-10 Play With 4-3 Win Over Arizona

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's tennis team dropped the doubles point to Arizona, but won the first four singles matches to start Pac-10 play with a 4-3 victory on Friday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.

Oregon improved to 7-3 (1-0 Pac-10) on the season with the win while Arizona fell to 5-3 (0-1 Pac-10).

The four-hour long match saw all six singles matches go to third sets and the Ducks needed them, as two of Oregon's wins did not take the first set.

Pavlina Smatova, who won 8-4 with Ana Cecilia Olivos at No. 1 doubles, started of the singles victories with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 come-from-behind victory at No. 2 singles. Carmen Seremeta tacked on Oregon's next win at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win. Oregon got another win in comeback fashion at No. 5 singles as Stephanie Macfarlane rallied from a 4-0 deficeit in the first set to win 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. Oregon sealed the deal with Siobhan Cavan's 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles.

The Ducks will need to rest and replenish quickly as they play their second-highest ranked foe of the season, No. 19 Arizona State, tomorrow at noon at the STC. The Sun Devils feature a pair of top-100 singles players, including No. 3 ranked sophomore Kelcy McKenna.

As at today's match, free pizza will be available for fans tomorrow afternoon.
